In the media

Animal Wellness Magazine invited me to write an article on preparing pets for winter. Included is how the change of seasons may affect older pets and those with medical conditions. The article appears in the Nov. - Dec. '05 issue. Read it here

Daytime Durham, the Rogers cable T.V. channel, invited me to appear on Thursday November 3, 2005. I provided insight into living with pets with special and geriatric needs. Accompanying me was Zack, a senior Bengal cat who has lost the use of his right foreleg due to injury. I demonstrated how a disability does not necessarily mean that a pet is now incapable of living a full life. Zack is a source of inspiration for anyone who has a pet with a medical condition, disability or geriatric concerns. Interested in a copy?

Future plans

Cozy Critters is always striving to do more for people and their pets. To that end, we are in the process of expanding our services.

Here are some of the services currently under development:

Pet loss support information sessions
*projected availability – mid 2005

All of us will one day face the stress, anxiety and grief associated with the loss of our pets. Severe or terminal illness, serious injury, disappearance of a pet, financial stress, these experiences can leave us feeling a variety of emotions. Our emotions require validation, understanding and we need a way to cope and move through the grieving process.

Mourning a pet is much the same as mourning a much loved person. However, still in this day and age there are those who don’t have a support system when it comes to pet loss. Employers, co-workers, even friends and family may not validate our loss and we are expected to keep quiet about our grief. Without anyone to talk to we feel lonely and isolated. Or perhaps our family and friends want to help but are at a loss as to how.

Cozy Critters, in partnership with Heartsease Counselling & Consulting, will soon be offering information sessions focused on pet loss. These sessions will cover all aspects of pet loss, anticipated loss, serious illness/injury, euthanasia/after-care and financial stress. We will provide answers to your questions and concerns, encourage open discussion and offer comprehensive coping strategies. These sessions are also open to those who wish to learn how to best support their family member or friend during a time of grief and anxiety.

Contact us by email or phone 905.426.2413 to receive more information regarding session content, location, dates and times, or if you have a particular concern you would like us to address. If sending email, please insert "pet loss sessions" in the subject line.

Sessions will be conducted in a comfortable, small group setting, or if you prefer, private sessions can be arranged.
For private sessions, please contact Sheila Raitt, R.S.W., Heartsease Counselling & Consulting by email, (insert pet loss sessions in the subject line), or phone 905.718.3205.
